What is Good Health?

Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again.

1 Thessalonians 5:23, NLT

Health, from an Eternal Perspective

Health is about more than the status of our bodies. Physical health helps us carry out the actions that show our faith in God while we glorify Him on earth. More sobering to consider is that when our physical bodies die, we’ll all continue to exist. Eternally. Our spiritual health is where we build our eternal relationship with Jesus, so when our bodies die, His blood covers our sins and buys our way into heaven.

And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.

Mark 12:30, NLT

For I command you this day to love the LORD your God and to keep his commands, decrees, and regulations by walking in his ways. If you do this, you will live and multiply, and the LORD your God will bless you and the land you are about to enter and occupy.

Deuteronomy 30:16, NLT (emphesis added)

Loving God is an action that requires effort from every facet of our being.

Whether we love or not, the desire to, and the need for love is there in our God-given spirit. Our hearts move and shape our love from the internal spirit outward to our souls. It’s there, in our minds, that we ponder and form our thoughts, reactions, and feelings. It’s where we make decisions on how to manifest what is inside us to the outside world through our bodies. The manifestation of what’s going on in our heart and soul can display itself in any and every form; physical affection, song and dance, physical touch, art, mechanics, design, etc.

If our central command as Christians hinges on such a profound effort, then we are responsible for caring for the parts of ourselves that put forth this tremendous effort.

The pieces of ourselves God calls on us to love Him with give us a pretty straight forward outline of where to focus on caring for ourselves. In order to serve him best we must learn how to, and become intent on taking care of our spirit, soul, and body.

Dear friend, I hope all is well with you and that you are as healthy in body as you are strong in spirit.

– 3 John 1:2, NLT

There are Bible verses applicable to each part of us. Below are verses that stand out, most strikingly, to me.

God’s Spirit lives in us. The Spirit is like the umbilical cord that connects us to Him. Without the Spirit we would be nothing. We’d have nothing to inspire us. There would be no desire within us to be holy.

1 John 4:13, NLT: And God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us.

Proverbs 18:14, NLT: The human spirit can endure a sick body, but who can bear a crushed spirit?

Our soul is the unique part of who we are. The part of us that God knit together in our mother’s wombs. The things that make us each a different part of the ‘Body of Christ.’

Matthew 16:26, NLT: And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?

Luke 1:46, NLT: Mary responded, “Oh, how my soul praises the Lord.”

Our bodies present our inner selves to the outside world. Action is the body’s domain.

Romans 12:1, NLT: And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.

Proverbs 3:7 – 8, NLT: Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the LORD and turn away from evil. Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones.
